Otis Elevator Korea
has launched its Green Shoots program, designed to promote elevator safety education, with an event at the Daeyong Elementary School in Singil-dong, Seoul. Otis, the world’s largest manufacturer and maintainer of people-moving products, including elevators, escalators and moving walkways, is a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).
The event featured a variety of interactive programs for students, including making an elevator model to learn how elevators operate and related safety issues. It provided the students with a valuable opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the environment and sustainability. The students also painted pictures with the theme of “Green Shoots Dream.”
YS Yu, Director of Environment, Health & Safety, Otis Elevator Korea, delivered welcoming remarks at the event. “Otis invented safe elevators more than 160 years ago, and today, the company is known for its culture of safety. We are committed to making the world a better place to live,” YS Yu said.
During the event, the school received a volume of books donated by employees and executives from Otis Elevator Korea. Fifteen volunteers from Otis Elevator Korea also updated the school’s facilities for an after school program classroom, including replacing the sink and plumbing, to ensure a clean environment for students.
“We are currently running two after school program classrooms but one of the classrooms lacked adequate facilities, which caused concerns about child safety,” said Kim Myuong-Ae, principal, Daeyong Elementary School. “Thankfully, Otis Elevator Korea improved the facilities and provided safety training, which helped us a lot.”
Since 2002, Otis Elevator Korea has provided elevator safety education to more than 15,000 children.
The United Technologies Green Shoots program helps enhance student learning environments through the building and replacement of educational facilities, library set-up, and teaching, with the goal of strengthening children’s awareness of environmental stewardship and safety. Since its launch in 2011, more than 4,000 United Technologies employees have volunteered in the Green Shoots program worldwide. The program has benefitted more than 150 primary schools throughout Asia including those in China, India, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Korea and Indonesia.
