Otis Korea Launches Green Shoots Campaign to Improve the Environment and Safety

An annual Otis global program launched in 2011 to support local children in need

SEOUL, South Korea, May 29, 2019 – Otis Elevator Korea (VP and Managing Director IS Cho; “Otis”) visited a local children’s center located in Guro-gu, Seoul as part of its ‘Green Shoots Campaign’ to improve the learning and living environment yesterday.

Otis, the world’s leading manufacturer and maintainer of people-moving products, including elevators, escalators and moving walkways, is a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

Thirty Otis employees visited the children’s center to help upgrade the facilities and make it a more engaging environment for the children to study and live in. The upgrade activities include applying new wallpaper, flooring repairs, replacement of old lockers and general Spring cleaning. In addition to volunteering their time, Otis Korea employees donated approximately 300 books to enhance the children learning and development.

Otis also offered an elevator safety and environment training program to 19 elementary and middle school students at the center. The program comprised of a quiz, eco-bag painting (with a safety and environmental theme) as well as learning the value of elevator safety at the same time.

IS Cho, who has taken part in the Green Shoots program annually since his appointment in 2014, rolled up his sleeves to work alongside Otis employees. “I find it extremely meaningful to be part of the program, which is designed to encourage a safe and hopeful future for these children,” he said. “We will continue to give back and expand the scope of our activities, to improve the learning environment and share the culture of safety with more children.”

“We have always wanted to improve the environment so that the children could be safer and happier, but we just could not afford it. With help from Otis, our children can now have a better foundation to build their dreams and hopes. We are going to do our best to keep our children healthy and help in developing their growth,” said Seong-suk Jo, head of the children’s center, as she conveyed her gratitude.

The Green Shoots Campaign is one of Otis’ global social community programs. The program aims to provide a stable learning environment and offer education on safety and environment conservation to children – the growing shoots – who need social care all over the world, supporting them to build a better future.

Launched in 2011, the Green Shoots Campaign is carried out every year by Otis regions around the world. With employees keen to take part voluntarily, the program upgrades dilapidated learning facilities, provides books and learning materials, and offers elevator safety training. The program is particularly significant in that it not only lends a helping hand to children who are in need but also supports Otis’ core values of ‘safety’ and ‘environment.’
