MANCHESTER, UK, November 2, 2018 — Otis UK has started installation of lifts, escalators, and moving walkways into the new Terminal 2 extension at Manchester Airport, which is undergoing a £1 billion investment program to transform the passenger experience and expand infrastructure capacity. Otis is a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).
Passengers will use 38 Gen2® Stream lifts that carry up to a maximum of 33 people and travel at a top speed of 3 metres/second. Otis will also install three goods lifts, eight escalators, which move at 0.5 metres/second, and four moving walkways. Each walkway is in excess of 50 metres and will travel at 0.5 metres/second.
The work, which is scheduled to be completed in 2020, will enable an estimated 35 million passengers to use the hub every year, an increase on the current 27.9 million figure. More than 210 different destinations are served by Manchester Airport, which sits at the heart of a super-connected transport network in northern England.
“This job from contractor Laing O’Rourke lays the foundation for a strategic footprint in the airport market,” said Bertrand Rotagnon, director of New Equipment, Otis UK. “Our skilled and experienced lift and escalator engineers will play a major role in equipping the airport with innovative people moving products to provide passengers with the best possible experience.”
