Otis has been serving the New York market since 1853 when Elisha Otis sold and installed his first elevator to a factory owner located on Hudson Street. Since then, the Big Apple has served as a stage for Otis to set many company-specific and industry-wide milestones. For example, in 1857 we installed our first passenger elevator in New York’s E.V. Haughwout Building, in 1903 we delivered the first gearless traction elevator to the Beaver Building in Manhattan’s Financial District, in 1931 Otis elevators were installed in the first building to ever top 100 floors – the Empire State Building.

To this day Otis continues to make history in some of New York’s most iconic, tallest and modern buildings. For example, we recently delivered and installed a custom-made glass elevator to carry visitors to the Empire State Building’s newly renovated 102nd floor Observatory. The installation essentially completes one of the largest and most complex modernization projects that Otis has undertaken in its 167-year history.
