Health & Safety

Connecting safely

We're improving safety through the equipment and materials we use, along with the policies and practices that guide the way we work.

Why safety matters

We are in the life-safety business. Our relentless focus on the safety and wellbeing of our colleagues and passengers leads to a more engaged and effective workforce and increased stakeholder confidence, which in turn improves customer delivery and business performance.

The safety of our colleagues

Safety isn’t just a policy; it’s a promise to our 72,000 colleagues that they return home healthy, unharmed and safe. As such, we continually invest in and update tools, processes, policies, education and the training necessary to keep our colleagues safe from workplace hazards.

Equal in importance to our colleague’s physical safety is their mental wellbeing. We provide access to a broad range of mental health and wellbeing resources to all Otis colleagues globally via Otis Colleague Care, our employee assistance program, as well as many engagement initiatives through our colleague-led, voluntary resource groups, which are also open to all colleagues at Otis.

The safety of our passengers

The safety of our passengers is paramount to achieving our vision. We embed compliance with codes and internal requirements for the safety of the riding public in Otis’ design, manufacturing installation and service of products.

We invest in research and development (R&D) and digital and strategic initiatives for smart connected technologies, and our portfolio includes designs and features that enhance passenger safety.

For example, many of our new elevators – such as the Otis Electric 7000 in China and the Gen360™ platform available in EMEA and China - come with a PESSRAL control system that provides more information about the operating condition of the elevator and reacts dynamically to safely resolve issues without halting operations.

In addition, our Automatic Rescue Operation feature brings passengers to the nearest floor during a power outage, while Otis ONE™, our internet of things (IoT) solution, allows us to perform frequent and recurring remote assessments of many critical safety systems.
