Solutions for a national symbol of freedom and patriotism

Statue of Unity:
Showcasing an inspirational leader’s vision

Located in Gujarat, India, on the Narmada River, the 182-meter Statue of Unity is the world’s tallest statue. The landmark depicts statesman and freedom fighter Vallabhbhai Patel – the first deputy prime minister and home minister of independent India. The statue was created to inspire generations by showcasing Patel’s vision on unity, patriotism, inclusive growth and good governance.

Made to move many people, fast

The Statue of Unity welcomes more than 12,000 daily visitors. Visitors can travel from the feet of the statue to a viewing gallery 135 meters up. Accomplishing this required advanced elevator solutions to seamlessly move large numbers of people to the viewing gallery throughout the day.

A record-time installation

Delivering industry-leading elevator projects is nothing new for Otis. But the installation challenges were unique for the Statue of Unity.

With a schedule of only 28 days between the handover of the hoistway and the commissioning of units, installation needed to be completed in record time.

Solution

The team at Otis always rises to new challenges.

To move visitors safely and quickly to the statue’s viewing gallery, Otis installed two SkyRise elevators. The units feature a small footprint and travel at speeds of 4 meters per second, delivering a seamless experience for thousands of visitors a day. Otis also ensures ongoing safety and performance of these heavily used elevators through an ongoing maintenance and service agreement.

The installation was completed in just 28 days thanks to the Otis team’s careful planning and collaboration with the customer. Otis prepared a detailed workplan and worked around the clock in three shifts to complete the installation. The project was also carried out without scaffolds, resulting in increased safety and quality.

Otis is proud to have played a critical role in such an iconic and meaningful project. The Statue of Unity serves as a destination and symbol of freedom for people across India. For Otis, it’s a reminder of what’s possible when we put innovation and determination to work to meet our customers’ needs.
