Keeping passengers and elevators safe during natural disasters

Understand more about elevator safety and how Otis supports customers and passengers before, during and after weather-related emergencies

Natural disasters, including hurricanes, tsunamis, fires, and earthquakes, pose a major challenge to buildings, including their elevators. With safety as our top priority, we share with you how to best prepare for and respond to these extreme situations to ensure everyone’s safety and protect your equipment.

How elevators stay safe during natural disasters

At Otis, people come first

How does Otis incorporate protection against natural disasters into the design of its elevators and services?

When you purchase a new Otis elevator, you can be sure that it meets the latest and most stringent safety standards. For new buildings located in flood zones, our teams often work with architects to position machine rooms above potential flood levels to minimize storm damage.

Our solutions can also include optional water protection features such as pit drains, sump pumps, or watertight enclosures. Many of these features are offered as standard, and additional optional upgrades are also available.

Supporting our customers and passengers continues after our equipment is commissioned. For example, in many countries, Otis companies are certified to ISO 22301, which assesses the quality of a company’s processes for providing emergency assistance in the event of a power backout.
