Contributing to the sustainability of buildings

We continue to innovate designing products that contribute to the sustainability of buildings. More than two decades ago, we first introduced our best-selling Otis Gen2^® elevator with smooth polyurethane coated steel belts. We are building on the proven design and flat-belt technology of our Gen2 family of elevators with our Gen3™ and Gen360™ platforms to provide smooth and comfortable rides. The lightweight, lubrication-free design of the Otis patented coated steel belts helps enhance ride quality, reduce maintenance needs, and support lasting performance.

Our Link™ escalators and Otis Gen2, Gen3, Gen360 and SkyRise™ elevators all come standard with the Otis ReGen™ drive technology that feeds electrical energy back into the building power grid during braking which can then be used to drive other equipment in the building.

Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) help our customers make informed procurement decisions thanks to the transparent and comparable information on many of our elevators and escalators' lifecycle environmental impacts, including energy consumption.

Lifecycle assessments (LCAs)

LCAs have identified raw-material supply and energy consumption during an elevator’s operational phase as the most relevant product-related environmental impacts.

Each EPD includes a precise breakdown of the product’s materials, records that the product meets the mandatory requirements of the European Union’s (EU) REACH and ROHS regulations:

Upstream (raw-material supply, transport, outsourced manufacturing)
Core (in-house manufacturing)
Downstream (transport and installation, use or operation, and end-of-life treatment)

As part of our focus on Environment & Impact, we are committed to registering and publishing Environmental Product Declarations for our next-generation elevator and escalator product platforms in accordance with ISO 14025 – the international standard driving criteria for environmental product declarations.

The Otis Gen360 platform

The Otis Gen360 platform is the industry’s first product to offer drive-by-wire technology. Typical configurations of Otis Gen360 elevators achieve ISO 25745 Class A ratings.

The Otis Gen3 platform

The Gen3 elevator platform is designed with features like sleep mode, LED Lighting and our ReGen™ drive.

Otis SkyRise elevators

The design of our SkyRise elevators minimizes space requirements. As a standard feature, they are equipped with our ReGen drive that feeds electrical energy back into the building power grid during braking, which can then be used to drive other equipment in the building. Otis SkyRise elevators are also equipped with sleep mode functionality and LED lighting that help reduce energy consumption. Otis SkyRise elevators also feature our compact gearless machines that are 80% smaller than traditional geared machines and combined with advanced permanent magnet motor technology.
